Host Your Own Wordpress Blog And You Will Be A Step Ahead Of Most Internet Marketers
Before I get into why I think setting up a Wordpress blog with your own host is important I have to say I procrastinated getting online a little bit tonight.
I just had to watch the finale of “So You Think You Can Dance”. I’ve watched it all season long, I just couldn’t miss the finale. I know, I know, probably a good waste of a couple hours, but it is the only show I really get in to. Anyhow, Brandon gets my vote! I don’t know if any of my fellow Alex Jeffrey’s students watch the show, but I think Brandon is a on a level just higher than the rest. Don’t get me wrong, they are all great, I really like Jeanine too, but Brandon is by far my favorite. Ok, my votes in. On to business…
Anyone that is really serious about having an online business and making money online should host their own blog. I know there are all kinds of free services and blogging platforms out there, beleive me, I have set up a ton of them, but if you are serious about having a successful online business, your own blog is the way to go.
Why should you host your own Wordpress blog?
First, you have a lot more flexibility and control when you have your own Wordpress blog. You can customize it and make it look however you want it to. With free blogging platforms you have limited options in designs and limits to what you can and can’t change. Being able to customize the look and feel of your blog helps to create a more professional look. You don’t want your blog to look like all the rest.
I also want to mention all the plugin options. The plugins are endless. I’m still learning how to use many of them and I am reading about new ones everyday that other bloggers are using. If you don’t know what plugins are, don’t worry, I’ll cover that in detail in an upcoming post. I didn’t know what they were either until just a few weeks ago. They are features you can install that can totally change the look of your blog, how visitors comment, back up your files, and so much more. There are plugins that help with your blog with SEO (seach engine optimization), which will improve your rankings in search engines, meaning more traffic to your blog. You can totally customize your blog with plugins.
Last I feel is the most important benefit to hosting your own blog. It’s your site, not someone elses. You have total control over what you put on your site. With free blogging platforms you run the risk of them going out of business or locking your account because they don’t like the content. Trust me, I know!
When I first entered the internet marketing world I set up a free Wordpress blog and it was locked before I even got a chance to publish it. It flagged the system because I had too many links and had to be manually reviewed before they would let me publish. Luckily I had just started this one so there wasn’t that much time invested yet. Imagine if this happened to a blog that you had spent weeks or months on even? All that work, all that traffic you were starting to build … gone.
Same case with the recent changes at Squidoo. I probably have about 40 Squidoo pages. They locked blogs that were on subjects they decided they didn’t like anymore because there were too many of them and they locked lenses that they felt were overpromotional. Luckily, Squidoo did give everyone plenty of notice so that you could save all your content and move it somewhere else, or make changes to it so that it wouldn’t get locked. I had a couple pages that I knew would get locked, but I have about 10 that I put a lot of work into that I was a little nervous about. So far I have been in the clear, but I didn’t take the chance of losing all my work and copied it all to other places online. Not all websites will give you notice though. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
If you host your own wordpress blog you don’t have to worry about losing all your hard work. It is yours and you can do with it as you please!
I should have started my own Wordpress blog a long time ago, but I thought it was going to be too complicated for me to figure out. But you know what? It’s really not that difficult. Installing my Wordpress blog was so much easier than I thought it would be and I’m really glad that I have finally done it. Getting myself over that wall is a huge step for me and for my online business and I’m really excited to help you get over it too. Seriously, if you host your own Wordpress blog you will be a step ahead of most bloggers trying to make money online.
Thanks so much for visiting. Please come back to learn more about setting up your own Wordpress blog. I will be posting everything you need to know to set up your own Wordpress blog from start to finish.

I love the theme of your blog. It is so nice and clean and uncluttered. Really must get down to letting people know what my goals are etc., it’ll make me stick to them!

Hi Heidi,
Thanks for visiting & commenting on my blog earlier.
What you say in this post is very true, you always want to have control of your content and features of your website.
If you aren’t hosting your own blog or website, you can’t really call what you are doing a business. And as we know, if you don’t treat this like a business, you most likely won’t succeed.
I also like the pictures you’ve added to this post, they go well with your theme too.

Hi Heidi,
This is a very important post and covers a lot of information that newbie marketers may not be aware of. I think it’s incredible that by hosting at Wordpress.com you actually give up the rights of ownership of your own content and of course they could delete your blog on a whim.
This is your business, for goodness sake, so you cannot leave the security or even the very existance of your blog to chance.
I was also not aware of the changes at Squidoo. I plan to create some “hubs” on the more popular Web 2.0 platforms but are we still able to create them on internet marketing related topics any more?

Hi David,
Thanks for stopping by. You can still promote affiliate products, but they are cracking down on lenses that have 9 or more links to the same page, lenses that are on topics that they feel have been overdone, such as the lose belly fat niche and I don’t think they allow lenses that promote affiliate programs any more. You can read in more details at http://www.squidoo.com/squidoo-policy-update. They are still good to use, but you just need to be sure you keep within their new policies. I just learned not to focus all of my effort on building squidoo lenses. You just never know. LOL
Hello. Thank you for this great info! Keep up the good job!
Howdy Heidi,
Pardon me there. I couldn’t help myself – I am SO into alliteration and word association etc. Ho hum…
… anyway – great looking blog. Nice post too. As David has said above it is VERY important to have control over your own “real estate” on the net.
I had a 3rd party hosted site years ago and it SUCKED! Big time. They OWNED everything and me nothing. So, I got out of that arrangement – it only took me about 18 months of utter misery. And on top of it all they were crooks too. Bad times. Enough said.
Stop by my TEMPLE some time and marvel at how enormous it has become. Just 8 short months ago I started out with a very basic wordpress blog. So, if you work consistently you will have something to be proud of. I’m sure you will – you’ve laready made a spectacular start!
Catch you Heidi.

Good blog, very good article. I have book mark the site.I will come again.
Heidi,
Even though I’ve been a computer programmer for 24 years, I didn’t have a clue how to set up a blog, what steps were involved in setting one up, nor did I know the pitfalls.
Thankfully by being on this course, and being mentored by Alex, we’ve had a ton of excellent advice thrown at us from the beginning, and we’ve sidestepped a lot of the potential snags and wrong decisions we could have made.
Wow, we’ve certainly all come a long way in such a short time. There a handful of blogs though, that don’t have value on them at all at the moment, which a shame.
Great site, oozes class.
Keep in touch

Thanks for your comment Rob. Writing has been pretty tough for me, but know with time it will get easier. I’m just trying to teach what I have learned so far from start to finish. I’m a bit behind on my posts since we’re a few weeks into the coaching, but I’m working on it.
Heidi
I’m gonna show my ignorance here but exactly what do you mean by “hosting your own blog”?
Seems like a simple term but to me it is not self-explanatory.
Is that the difference between using Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org? Where dot org is when you upload your blog domain name thru your own web hosting company.
I’ve done my blog thru my web host to worpress.org but am wondering if I’m missing out on something different called “hosting your own blog”.
Just asking.
Thanks
Norm
Norm´s last blog ..It Does Get Easier But It Is Tricky
Hi Norm,
Yes, that is exactly right. Many people just set up their blogs on Wordpress.com or Blogger.com, but they don’t own their blogs then and they don’t have complete control over them. If Blogger or Wordpress decides they don’t like your blogs they can lock your account. When you set up your blog with a host, such as Bluehost or Hostgator, then you actually own your blog.
Hey Heidi,
Thanks for your kind words you left on my blog, I think your blog is great, very clear and uncluttered and the colour scheme really adds to it AND also your content is just spot on,
Norm,
If you’ve done your blog thru Wordpress.org then you are on the right track and it sounds like you are hosting your own blog on your web hosters space, wordpress.com is where they have total control over your blog not you.
Hope this helps,
Kind regards
Guy.
