Every Successful Online Business Starts With A Plan

The first module in Alex Jeffrey’s coaching program focuses a great deal on planning. If you really want to start a successful online business you need to plan and set your goals. Get it all down on paper and hold yourself accountable.

Every successful person with an online business has well thought out plans and mind maps. They always know exactly what their next 5 tasks are.

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”  – Benjamin Franklin

This quote is so true. If you don’t know where you are going and what you are working towards, how do you know where to begin?

PlanningMy day time job is with a company that teaches time management so you would think that I would have known to plan from the day I started internet marketing. Would you believe I own three daily planners? I think part of my problem in the beginning is that I was so overwhelmed with the business that I had no idea how to create any kind of plan.

So where do you start? What should my plan look like?

This is how Alex Jeffrey’s recommends you plan your online business:

  1. Plan your year.
  2. Do four 90 day plans.
  3. Take your first 90 days and break it into 3 monthly plans.
  4. Then take your first month and break it into 4 weekly plans.
  5. Then break week 1 into daily tasks.
  6. Plan tomorrow.

You always want to plan tomorrow today. Know exactly what you need to do. Know what tasks will bring in the most money and are your most important tasks.

Always be sure you plan in time to plan.

Be sure you don’t rush through your plans. You do want to take time and really think about each plan, what you want to have done and where you want to be. By creating a year, 90 day, monthly, weekly and daily plan it gives you specific deadlines to work towards. Don’t worry about perfection. Planning will come with practice and you can always make adjustments down the road. Just get you plans on paper.

“The beginning is the most important part of the work.”  – Plato

Well, I’m off to get my online business plan down on paper.

What do you have in your year plan … ?

Can’t say enough about planning, that’s for sure. For me, however, I’m not going to get into too heavily until the course with Alex is over. Seems every time something comes that throws a curve at what I did plan and it all goes out the window anyways. In the meantime I’m keeping track of what needs to be done..and has been done…plus categorizing them A.B.and C.

    Cheers,

  • Hello,

Very true planning is a essential part of succeeding in business. I have trouble with the short term interruptions and distractions. I am going to try harder at eliminating non-productive work. I like your post.

Thanks Mike, I have the same problem with distractions. I find that I do best when I know exactly what tasks I need to do and then work my way through them. It’s the same for me at my daytime job. I get more done when I have daily list sitting in front of me.

  • Great post Heidi. Planning and lack of focus do me in all the time. Even though I knew I had to get my self organized it was great to hear Alex Jeffreys talk about how he plans his whole year out! We buy into the Internet marketing persona of a slacker making millions but the reality is far from it. We all need a plan.

  • Hi Heidi,

If there is anything that has had a bigger impact on my buisness and that is planning, it’s critical!

Having my goals setin stone has also given me the drive too.

I think thevalue of planning cannot be underestimated. Without a plan and focus it is easy to go off at tangents and not achieve core tasks towards our goals.

I’ve previously made the mistake of a lack of planning and have achieved little with no specific focus and direction. Things will be different this time!!

Could do with some time management advice as find that there are simply not enough hours in the day, so shoot me a line if you can help….

You are definately right planning is so important. Without a plan how do you know where you are going or want to go.

You also need a clear vision of where we want to go. Without a clear vision of where you want to go how can you get there. If we get a clear vision of were we want to go and really have a mental picture of it this will help us to stay on track.
I think of it as going from Point A to Point B. Point A is where we are now and Point B is our vision. We need to create a mental picture in our heads of Point B because if we don’t have this clear mental picture of the vision as we travel along a path from Point A to Point B (our vision) we may start to feel stressed and overwhelmed and may revert back to Point A. This is because Point A is familiar to us. To make Point B familiar to us and to keep us on track we need to get a mental picture of it in our head. This will help us to drive to Point B as we have a picture of it in our head.
